Train Ride From Nice to Alps

The Train des Pignes operates on metre-gauge track laid in 1911, a width chosen to navigate the tight curves and steep gradients of the Var valley. The line climbs 1,000 metres from sea level at Nice to the alpine plateau near Digne, passing through microclimates that shift visibly every twenty minutes: olive groves give way to oak forest, then to scrub pine and exposed limestone. Departures run hourly during peak season, with the railway serving both tourists and residents of the valley communes. The station at Nice sits behind the main SNCF terminus, a separate platform that signals the shift from high-speed national rail to a regional line built for terrain rather than speed. Seating is not reserved; passengers board on a first-come basis, and window seats on the northern side capture the widest views of the Var gorge and the Coulomp viaduct. The route's engineering was designed to follow natural contours rather than cut through them, resulting in a journey that moves laterally through the landscape instead of overpowering it. Thirteen of the line's stations serve villages with populations under 500, where the train remains the primary link to Nice and the coast. The Chemins de Fer de Provence, the operator, runs both modern railcars and occasional heritage trains with open-window carriages that allow unfiltered sound and air from the valley. Ticket costs are calculated by zone, with prices increasing for longer distances. The railway offers no onboard catering; passengers bring provisions or purchase them at station kiosks in Nice or Annot. The final stretch into Digne crosses the Bléone river plain, where lavender fields replace the rocky gorges of the lower valley, and the Alps appear as a visible ridgeline rather than a distant suggestion.
